Re:connect (English camp 2013)

First of all I have to say that I am really excited about this English camp. It was amazing and i am so glad I could be there. In the beginning I was a bit scared. It was English camp where i had to speak English for all seven days and be there with lot of new people. Normally I am afraid of speaking in English. Even with my Czech friends who speak English! And I am not that type of person who is used to be with 40 people. But if I didn´t go there, I would miss a lot.

The whole camp schedule was like this: In the morning after the beginning  ofthe program (and dancing camp dance) - we had an english lesson, then iniciatives and after them was a lunch. After the lunch we had a break (I was really happy, because I know camps where we were doing a lot of things and did not have any break. This breaks really helped me) After the break had outdoor games and then crafts, dinner and evening program. After the evening program we had an e-night.

First night we were divided into eight groups for our english classes and evening discussions. I was assigned to the black team where Brad was leader and we began with discussion. That evening we talked about names and about story of Simon and his renaming to Peter.

Second day in the morning we started with english classes. In the beginning I was really afraid of them. I imagined us sitting around the table and someone trying to teach us the different tenses and difficult words or something.

But I  have to say that Brad is good teacher. he made this lessons interesting and funny. During the first lesson we learned something about pronunciation. For example how to pronounce the hard word like: thief. We were sitting in the circle  and saying: „thief, thief, thief“ until we made it. Finally we made a group banner and named us the „Black thives“.

In one another lesson we played game in wich we learned how does it looked like when you go to the restaurant in Amerika. I would like to order everything from the menu, because the waiter was so insistent. It was interesting to see the differences between Slovak and American waiters.

The next day we talked about movies. Brad played for us some trailers and we were talking about them. We even played the drama from movies. Me and Marek, we played Twilight like western. We played Bella and Jakob and…well, it was interesting to watch how he was aiming a gun to me.

I will never forget Brad´s motivation: „If you will speak, you will have a candyy..“  I´m glad that I am not the only one, who uses this method in the kindergarden. The candies are always a good motivation.

All day activity

After the english lessons were iniciatives. We played a lot of different games in which we should learn something and then we talked about it.  The craziest one for me was probably the last day iniciative. In this iniciative there were one blind, one deaf, and one mute person. The rest of the team were obstacles. The person who saw whole track and deaf person should navigate the blind person by pantomime. I wanted to try to be blind. It looked really interesting, but after that experience i dont want to be blind anymore. Imagine that you are standing with bandana on your eyes and waiting when some´s voice start to navigate you. Meanwhile you hear some other voices shout: „To the right, to the left, jump..jump!“ And sometimes you don´t hear your own voice. Then you have to stay and wait. It was really confusing. But I am really glad I could try it.

Crafts

After the one hour break we had activities. It was two hour outdoor games – mostly running games. After the activities there were crafts or american sports. In crafts we did origami and really awesome and colorful bracelets. I tried to play baseball too. And I even stroke the ball for the first time in one game :-).

After the diner there was the evening program, where we dance a camp dance. I really love camp dance! Then the band played and every evening we had short talks and discussion.

After the evening program was e-night – each has a different theme like Hipster, Wild West, the Great Gatsby, Army and Labyrint. Labyrint was very interesting for me – I realize a lot of important things for me in it.

It was really blessed week for me! :-)

"The Great Gatsby" e-night

První co musím říct je, že jsem obrovsky obrovitánsky nadšená z tohohle english campu. Bylo to úžasné a jsem moc ráda, že jsem tam mohla být. Ze začátku jsem se toho docela bála. Byl to english camp, kde jsem měla mluvit sedm dní anglicky a být tam se spoustou nových lidí. Normálně mám hrůzu z toho mluvit anglicky. A to dokonce i jen se svými přáteli, kteří umí anglicky – natož s američany! A taky nejsem ten typ člověka, který je zvyklý na to, že je kolem něj čtyřicet lidí. Kdybych tam ale nejela, tak bych rozhodně o spoustu věcí příšla.

Celý kemp probíhal tak, že jsme ráno po zahájení programu (a odtančení camp dance) měli hodinu angličtiny, potom iniciativy, po iniciativách byl oběd. Po obědě jsme měli pauzu, což jsem byla moc ráda, protože znám kempy, kde se jede od rána dovečera a ta pauza vážně hodně pomohla. Po pauze byly venkovní aktivity, potom crafty, večeře a večerní program. Po večerním programu následoval e-night.

První večer nás rozdělili do anglických skupinek ve kterých jsme měli být jak při hodinách angličtiny, tak při večerních diskuzích. Byla jsem přidělena do černého týmu, kde byl vedoucí Brad a začali jsme diskusí, kde jsme si povídali o jménech a o tom, jak byl Šimon přejmenovaný na Petra.

Druhý den ráno jsme začali angličtinou – z té jsem měla největší strach. Představovala jsem si, jak sedíme za stoly s papíry a někdo se nám snaží do hlavy vtloukat ty různé předpřítomné časy.

Brad je ale vážně skvělý učitel. Udělal ty hodiny zajímavé a byla to i docela sranda. Na první hodině jsme se učili správnou výslovnost určitých hlásek. Například vyslovit: thief. Říkali jsme „thief“ do kola tak dlouho, dokud jsme nedali jazyk správně mezi zuby. J Nakonec jsme vyráběli skupinový plakát a pojmenovali se „Black thieves“..

Při jedné hodině jsme hráli hru, na které jsme se učili, jak to vypadá, když příjdete do restaurace v americe. Číšníci jsou na vás příliš hrr. Při té rychlosti a neodbytnosti jak nás tam Brad obcházel a nabízel nám jídlo..no, nejspíš bych tam vyjedla celý jídelníček. Bylo to ale zajímavé vidět rozdíl mezi číšníky v americe a na Slovensku.

Další den jsme si povídali o filmech. Brad nám pouštěl trailery a my je měli převyprávět, potom nám pouštěl zvuk z krátkého filmu a my mu měli zkusit říct o čem si podle sluchu myslíme, že to bylo. Dokonce jsme hráli scénky z filmů. Já a Marek jsme dostali téma Twilight na western. Hráli jsme Bellu a Jakoba a no..bylo zajímavé koukat jak na mě míří zbraní J.

Taky nezapomenu na Bradovu motivaci: „If you will speak, you will have a candyy..“ No, jsem ráda, že to nepoužívám jen já na děti v besídce. Sladkosti jsou vždycky dobrá motivace J.

Po angličtinách byly na řadě iniciativy. Hráli jsme spoustu různých her, při kterých jsme se měli něco naučit a potom o nich diskutovali. Nejšílenější pro mě asi byla ta poslední den. Bylo to o tom, že byl jeden člověk slepý, jeden člověk hluchý a jeden němý. Ostatní z týmu byli překážková dráha. Ten člověk který viděl celou tu dráhu i toho slepého, měl pomocí pantomimy ukazovat tomu hluchému kam má slepý jít a hluchý to měl vykřikovat a radit tak slepému trasu. Chtěla jsem si zkusit být slepá. Bylo to vážně zajímavé, ale už nikdy nechci být více slepá. Představte si to: Stojíte se zavázanýma očima na trávníku a čekáte, až vás bude ten správný hlas navigovat. Mezitím slyšíte spoustu dalších hlasu, které volají: „Doprava, doleva, skrč se!“ A občas se stane, že neslyšíte ani ten který máte. Tak vám nezbyde nic jiného než zůstat stát a čekat..

Po hodině pauzy jsme měli aktivity. Byly to dvouhodinové venkovní hry – většinou běhací. Po aktivitách byly crafty, nebo americké sporty. V craftech jsme dělali origami a pak vážně nádherné barevné náramky. V amerických sportech jsem si skusila zahrát baseball..a dokonce se mi povedlo trefit i míček napoprvé! J

Po večeři jsme vždy měli večerní program, kde jsme tančili camp dance, hrála kapela a potom jsme měli slovo. Celý týden jsme procházeli příběhem Petra. Nakonec byly diskuse.

Po večerním programu následoval e-night. Pokaždé na jiné téma. Témata byla: Hipster, wild west, the great Gatsby, army a Labyrint. Labyrint byl pro mě moc zajímavý..uvědomila jsem si spoustu věcí při tom, co jsem jej procházela.
